DRIVING IN COSTA RICA: >>
One of the things I recommend for all travelers and expats!
You need the app called "Waze".
Google maps used to be my holy grail for GPS and navigation, but I have found it doesn't work half as well as Waze.
Most Costa Ricans use this app, so you will have very accurate info on live, up-to-date traffic reports, accident or police reports, the option to get there in the fastest time or shortest route, avoid traffic by picking alternate routes, search for gas stations, restaurants and easily find your hotel or beach you're looking for.
If you already know your destinations, you can download Waze, save the destinations you are heading to as a favorite, and the map with directions will be stored. Load Waze while you are on wifi at the hotel or restaurant before you leave, and it will give you current ETA and traffic info.
Now, if you leave your internet connection and do not have data on your phone, you won't perpetually have an updated ETA, but the map will still be there, and you'll likely get there just fine. :)
If you do have data, all the real-time info will be relayed to you.
We will talk more about using your cell phone in Costa Rica Here soon. So for now, get ahead of the game and get Waze on your device! Available in iTunes & Android. PS - It's FREE!!

Solar Power >>
One of draws to Costa Rica is the warm climate and eco-culture. Solar power is an amazing way to save money, protect yourself from power outages and embrace eco-friendly energy and harness the power of the sun, all while slashing or eliminating your electric bill.
If you haven't already heard, electricity costs are pretty high here. If you're looking to reduce your carbon footprint, solar power is the way to go!
Cr-Solar is an American-run company located in Atenas. (So yes, they speak English!) They are reputable in our community and are reasonably priced. I don't have a place I own to personally use them - yet, I am not endorsed by them, simply sharing some good contact info for those who are looking to go with solar.
